Smith receives J.G. Owens Scholarship

Northeastern Technical College student Calandra Smith received the 2023 J.G. Owens Scholarship.

Smith, from Society Hill, enters NETC pursuing an associate degree in nursing to become a registered nurse with a long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.

"This is my passion. We need more good nurses in the world and I have an opportunity to become one," she said.

Smith earned a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Claflin University in 2008.

In 1985, J.G. "Pete" Owens was appointed to Area Commission for Northeastern Technical College, then named Chesterfield-Marlboro Technical College. During his tenure on the commission, Owens was instrumental in establishing the curriculum for the registered nursing associate's degree. Owens served on the commission continuously for 30 years serving two terms as chairman until he retired from the board in 2015.

Owens retired in 2006 from B.C. Moore's and Sons where he served as executive vice president and director of the company. Owens was active in Cheraw serving as a mentor at Cheraw Primary; Cheraw First United Methodist treasurer, strategic planning team, and church council; and was named by NETC Student Government Association twice to receive the Outstanding Contributor to Technical Education Award.
