Scholarships available for advanced manufacturing program

Opportunities to work in today's state-of-the art manufacturing field are increasing by leaps and bounds and Northeastern Technical College (NETC) is now training individuals to go directly into the workforce to meet this growing demand.

The South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC) program is a new educational pathway at NETC that trains individuals as production technicians who can operate the technologically-advanced equipment and robotics used in today's manufacturing plants.

State workforce development initiatives will also provide 100% scholarship funding for unemployed or underemployed residents of South Carolina and others who qualify for the program.

The 200-hour SCMC program will help individuals increase their employability for high-demand, well-paying jobs by earning an industry-recognized national certification.  The starting salary for a certified production technician ranges from $25,000 to $35,000, and there are many growth opportunities in the field.

Production technician training provides both classroom and hands-on instruction over a period of approximately 10 weeks, teaching the essential skills required for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing.

"By the end of the program, individuals will master the soft and technical skills for advanced manufacturing, understand how to work effectively in a manufacturing environment, and comprehend the importance of continuous improvement in the manufacturing process," said Sherrie Chapman, dean of continuing education.  "They will also learn the essential skills needed to gather, interpret and use data consistently and accurately, learn to measure using a wide variety of instruments, master the use of hand and power tools, improve communication skills, increase safety awareness, and also learn to read blueprints."

The SCMC program at NETC provides 100% scholarship funding through the South Carolina General Assembly for those who meet the following qualifications:  Hold a silver level Work Keys certification, be unemployed or underemployed, be a SC resident and also pass a drug screen and background check.  Individuals who are currently employed, but would like to "re-career" into the manufacturing sector may also be eligible for scholarship funding.

NETC will be starting a Production Technician training program in November and another program will begin in January.  Individuals seeking more information on the SCMC Production Technician program should call the NETC Continuing Education division at (843) 921-6920.
