NETC Student Takes Top Prize in Poetry Interpretation at State Competition

Northeastern Technical College (NETC) dual enrollment student Diego Wheeler took home first place in the poetry interpretation category of the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association's annual competition at Lander University on Saturday, April 15th.

Diego is a high school senior and dual enrollment student from Lakeview High School. He's been part of NETC's Theatre club for two years, performing in productions such as Cinderella, The Glory Road, and most recently The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Competing against other talented college students from across the state, Diego delivered a captivating performance of "The Hill We Climb" by Amanda Gorman, impressing the judges with his command of the text and his ability to convey its emotional depth through his delivery. His victory marks a significant achievement for Diego and the NETC Theatre Club.

"I'm incredibly proud of Diego for his exceptional performance at the state competition," said NETC Theatre Club advisor, Lisa Morman-Patterson. "He is a dedicated and talented student, and this achievement reflects his hard work and commitment to his craft. I'm confident that he will continue to excel in his studies and make us proud as he moves forward in his academic and professional pursuits."

Following the performance, judges praised the Diego saying that it was "amazing
and emotional delivery," and commenting that Diego didn't rely on reading as much as the other contestants, he provided more gestures, and used more voice/tone modulation to reach the audience.

The NETC Theatre Club's victory is a significant achievement, and it reflects the college's commitment to fostering a rich and vibrant arts community. The club's members are eager to build on their success and continue to pursue their passion for theatre.

Dual enrollment programs like the one at NETC offer students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school, giving them a head start on their post-secondary education and preparing them for success in college and beyond. With this victory, Diego has shown that he has the talent and dedication to succeed at the highest levels of competition.
