NETC Employees “step up” to Million Step Challenge
60 full-time employees have "stepped up to the challenge," following the kick-off event to Northeastern Technical College's 1,000,000 Step Challenge on January 27.
The 1,000,000 Step Challenge is a reward-based walking program, initiated by the college's wellness committee, to encourage employees to exercise and get moving more, while also improving the overall health of participants along the way. But, just in case good health isn't enough to get everyone moving, the college is also planning to reward employees as they reach milestone goals along the path to program success.
"The Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for us to deliberately get up and get moving. We hope our employees will experience the many health and well-being benefits research says walking can provide," said wellness committee member Elizabeth Hamrick.
During the kick-off event, participants received advice and walking tips from Sonny Usher, RN-BC, Director of Cardiopulmonary Services at Chesterfield General Hospital, and also were able to ask questions of their own, such as how much water to drink, the use of artificial sweeteners, the importance of vitamins, and more.
Each full time employee who registered for the program received a free pedometer, walking log, walking maps and information packets upon sign up for the Challenge, which is slated to run February through December 2015.
The NETC Wellness Committee is also planning to promote American Heart Month during February, with the National Go Red Day on February 6 and heart health events throughout the month.
