Faculty Spotlight: Marty Gooden

After 19 years of working for Schaeffler, Marty Gooden shifted to the family chicken farm.

With two decades in machine tool working in Cheraw, it was time for a break.

That was 2008 and Gooden's time off did not last long.

Gooden received a call from Northeastern Technical College wanting to put two decades of machine and tool experience to use and pass down that knowledge to new generations of skilled workers.

"I had more free time than I thought on the farm," he said. "I knew the instructors at Northeastern Technical College and decided to come back to the field in a different way. "

Gooden began as a part-time adjunct instructor and took the first available full-time instructor position within a year of instructing.

"I enjoy teaching students who want to learn and show them a trade that can provide for them and their families," Gooden said.

Gooden's ongoing mission at NETC is to keep its machine tool programs modern to support the needs of industry providing training to students with valued skillsets. The fundamentals of machine tools have remained consistent, but the precision of the digital age constantly evolves, he said.

During his tenure at NETC, Gooden has taught everything from safety classes to hydraulics; he is currently teaching blueprints and machine tool theory.

Gooden has kept pace with industry standards being accredited by the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS), as an instructor as well as being part of the team securing NIMS accreditation in 2023 for the program offered on the Cheraw campus.

NIMS is a widely recognized organization requiring rigorous examination for schools to meet the educational needs of the manufacturing and machining industries.
