Early Childhood

Early childhood programs prepare students to work with children and families in child development centers, family or group homes or agencies.  Employment opportunities include child care teacher, teacher assistant and family service worker.  Criminal background records check and health information are required.

Students interested in owning, operating or managing a day care facility should enroll in the associate degree program with business specialty. The degree covers not only early childhood teaching methodologies, but also provides the graduate with the business skills needed for these positions. Coursework in business law, small business management, payroll accounting and supervision are incorporated into the degree program to provide the necessary skills to effective operate a day care facility.

Note: These are occupational courses, not intended for transfer and do not lead to teacher certification. These courses may serve as electives for the Associate in Arts degree. Eligible students may earn the Early Childhood credential and  receive financial assistance for completion of ECD 101 through SC Center for Child Care Career Development and through T.E.A.C.H. Students interested in working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree with an elementary education major enroll in the associate degree transfer program. In addition to the early childhood teaching methodologies included in the curriculum, the transfer track includes general education courses that transfer to all public institutions in South Carolina. Interested students should contact their advisor to discuss the transferability of the major courses (ECD) to the institution of their choosing.
