Students gain a competitive edge with NETC internship program

Three Northeastern Technical College students are gaining a competitive edge in the job market with a new internship program implemented by the college this spring. Della Edgeworth of Pageland, Yazmine Hardwick of Dillon, and Delonte' Melton of Cheraw are NETC business majors who are leading the way for future students by putting their education to work in a real-world setting.

Internships provide students with work experience while also allowing them to explore and acquaint themselves with the career field they are interested in.

Edgeworth is a business accounting major interning this semester in the college's business office. She aspires to work in an accounting office for a local business or industry. Melton is majoring in computer technology and also working as an intern in the business office. Following NETC, he hopes to open his own information technology business.

Some of the areas Edgeworth and Melton are learning about during their internship include customer service, cash management, account receivables and payables, financial statements, the development of policies and procedures, communication best practices, and marketing.

"As interns in the college's business office, both Della and Delonte' are gaining the valuable experience needed to structure their own successful business and make management decisions," said Ken Burton, NETC director of finance. "These interns are working on projects that benefit our staff and college, while also providing them the opportunity to develop important business management skills for their futures."

Hardwick, a business administration major, is working as a paid intern in the human resources department and plans to continue her education at a four-year university before pursuing a career in human resources.

Some of the projects Hardwick is involved with as an intern include interviewing skills, the onboarding process for new employees, employee wellness and engagement initiatives, and legal issues surrounding human resources.

"Internships are a valuable hands-on work experience for students," said Christi Meggs, NETC's director of human resources. "When added to academic knowledge, internships provide students an advantage when entering the workforce. It provides exposure to workplace situations, that allow them to adapt more quickly to different work environments."

NETC is providing internship opportunities at the college and in the community. Currently, there are openings for interns at Perdue Farms in Dillon, Signode in Latta, and Harbor Freight in Dillon. Students interested in internships should call 843-921-1485 or email svanpelt@netc.edu for more information.
