Spencer Winburn, a student at Northeastern Technical College (NETC), produced four TV commercials to help increase the College's communication efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series centered around the theme "Anytime, Anywhere." WPDE ABC15 aired the videos, and the College featured them on its social media pages.
In response to the pandemic, NETC transitioned from a face to face college experience to a virtual college platform. The College purchased 225 new laptops to expand its laptop loaner program. NETC partnered with Sandhill Telephone Cooperative and Spectrum to provide internet access to students. The commercials highlighted the College's efforts in a fun cinematic way that informed students and prospects about the tools and resources available to them at NETC.
Winburn attended the Los Angeles Film School for two months before deciding to transfer to NETC, where he is now pursuing his associate's degree in business administration. He is a member of the Student Government Association and has volunteered at recruitment events sharing his experiences with high school students. Winburn owns and operates Spencer Winburn Studios, his production company, out of a storage room filled with lights, cameras, and green screens. He plans to move the studio to a larger facility soon.
Winburn worked directly with Dr. Wagner, NETC President, on the scripts and creative aspects of the videos. They strategically shot footage at locations that highlighted the beautiful natural scenery and recreational opportunities in the Pee Dee Region. Desiring to reach a broader demographic and showcase the region as a great place to live, work, raise a family, and receive a quality higher education, Wagner knew Winburn possessed a unique skill set to accomplish that. "NETC is excited to highlight the talents of our students in and out of the classroom," Wagner said.
Winburn recently won the "Pocket Studio Award" at the 2020 Doko Film Festival. The Festival presents this award to filmmakers who produce the best film using a smartphone. Winburn shot all the footage for the NETC commercials using a smartphone. He will be entering his newest film 'Sugarloaf," a horror film into the Myrtle Beach International Film Festival, Beaufort Film Festival, and Raleigh Film Festival.
"I've always had a passion for film and storytelling, so when Dr. Wagner approached me about making commercials to reach a wider audience, I was all about the opportunity," Winburn said. "It has been an amazing experience working with the college on this marketing effort."
