State funded training program to begin in Dillon and Bennettsville

Northeastern Technical College is looking for individuals who are interested in a career in advanced manufacturing to register for the upcoming SCMC Certified Production Technician training being offered at the Dillon and Bennettsville campuses.

The program, beginning February 9 in Dillon and February 16 in Bennettsville, will be offered Monday through Friday during the day for the first two weeks, with the remainder of the program being offered as evening classes from 5 to 9 p.m.

Currently there is a state workforce development initiative that provides 100% scholarship funding for eligible residents of South Carolina who are veterans, unemployed, underemployed or even those who are would like to "re-career" into the field of advanced manufacturing. The program is also funded by the SNAP2Work, a program for food stamp recipients, who can provide DSS proof of eligibility for the month the program starts. All costs incurred are covered to provide the opportunity to be work ready!

The SCMC program consists of 160 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of hands-on training. Classes extend over a period of approximately 10 weeks and will help individuals increase their employability for open jobs in our area with industry-recognized national certifications. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates have the opportunity to earn four nationally recognized certifications including MSSC Certified Production Technician, Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, OSHA – General Industry Safety and Adult CPR.

"By the end of the program, individuals should master the soft and technical skills for advanced manufacturing, understand how to work effectively in a manufacturing environment, and comprehend the importance of continuous improvement in the manufacturing process," said Sherrie Chapman, Dean of Continuing Education. "They will also learn the essential skills needed to gather, interpret and use data consistently and accurately, learn to measure using a wide variety of instruments, master the use of hand and power tools, improve communication skills, increase safety awareness, and also learn to read blueprints."

A number of local industries have committed to hire new employees exclusively from the production technician program, which will end in May 2015. The starting salary for a certified production technician ranges from $25,000 to $35,000, and there are many growth opportunities in the field.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old; successfully complete a drug screen and background check ($20 fee); score silver (4) or better on the WorkKeys test; and have a high school diploma or GED. Candidates who qualify should be prepared to adhere to the attendance policy and satisfactorily complete all components of the training.
