NETC awarded $2.9 million to support student success

Northeastern Technical College (NETC) has been awarded a $2.9 million grant to improve the educational success of African-American males in the local area. The college is one of 23 colleges across the nation to receive the five-year grant, which was awarded under the Department of Education's Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) Competitive Grants Program.

"The Strengthening Minority-Serving Institutions Grant to Northeastern Technical College is great news for the Seventh District and the state of South Carolina," said Congressman Tom Rice (SC-07). "This multi-million dollar grant will help Northeastern Technical College address the needs of minority students and help to improve their educational success, in turn helping them secure quality jobs after graduation."

The PBI program has been in place at NETC since 2008, and helped to develop several programs and services over the years, ensuring that African American male students attending NETC have all the advantages they need to succeed in earning a college credential.

"It's an exciting time at NETC as we look forward to expanding services for our students through this new grant," said PBI Project Director, Valerie Garguilo. "With this funding we look to increase dual enrollment services for our growing student population in all three counties and build on a strong online course development foundation and expand support for our online students. We will also provide comprehensive support services for our grant cohort, including a one-stop student resource center over the next five years."

Programs that have been developed through PBI grant support include the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program, which allows high school students to earn college credit; the TRUMPET program, which provides resources and one-on-one services for African American male students; and the continuous development of online courses, which helps remove barriers for students who have class time and location restraints.

The grant will enable the college to build upon the achievements of the programs stated above, allowing NETC to enhance and expand services in the future, Ms. Gargiulo explained.

"We're really excited about being able to expand our services to so many students," said Dr. Ron Bartley, Northeastern Technical College president. "There are so many of the citizens in our three county service region that will be able to benefit because of this grant."

Dr. Bartley added that this PBI award is the largest grant ever received by Northeastern Technical College.

Programs such as PBI have helped to improve the graduate success rate at NETC, which was 95.3% for the 2013-14 year. According to recent graduate placement surveys, more than 95% of NETC Alumni are either working in their field of study or continuing their education.
