Marlboro Industry Training Center receives contribution from Flakeboard

The Marlboro County Industry Training Center recently received additional financial support with a contribution from Flakeboard, an industry leader in the production of quality composite wood panels, located in Bennettsville.

"Flakeboard is extremely pleased to be involved in this initiative," said Travis Billingsley, Flakeboard regional human resource manager.  "The company is always looking for skilled craft workers and we see the Industry Training Center as an important way to prepare the workforce for these types of jobs. We look forward to working with NETC as the center is developed."

The Industry Training Center is a collaborative project between Northeastern Technical College, Marlboro County School District, the North Eastern Strategic Alliance, industry partners, and the Marlboro Economic Development Partnership, involving the renovation of portions of the former Bennettsville Elementary School located on Lake Paul Wallace.  Upon its completion, the center will partner with area industries to train workers for industrial and manufacturing jobs and will include five fully functioning training classrooms and a number of labs to support specialized training needed by local industries for their workers.

Flakeboard acquired its Bennettsville production facilities in 2006 and has experienced success in the community over the years.  The company currently has 300 employees at the Bennettsville location with four divisions specializing in distribution, lamination, particle board, and medium-density fiberboard.

"We have a major investment in our Bennettsville operation.  It has been very productive and we want to continue to grow.  The company also has a very positive involvement with NETC and the Marlboro Economic Development Partnership," said Billingsley.  "One of our business principles is continuous improvement - this is a perfect opportunity to embrace this business principle and also take that thought into the community."

NETC President Dr. Ron Bartley expressed appreciation for Flakeboard's support: "We appreciate Flakeboard's commitment to training and upgrading of worker skills in Marlboro County.  We are excited to have a presence in the county and are committed to having a training center that will provide skilled workers for our manufacturers."

The anticipated completion of the training center is planned for 2014.  The Marlboro Industry Training Center will also be able to support students while they are finishing their high school program.
