JROTC Students Rank Higher with NETC

Friday, September 13, Northeastern Technical College (NETC) hosted an information session for high school students participating in Junior ROTC programs to learn more about the resources and benefits available to them if they choose to pursue a military career.

The event was held at the NETC Marlboro County Campus. Approximately 115 Junior ROTC students from Marlboro, Dillion, and Chesterfield counties were in attendance.

New recruits enlisting in the military typically start at E-1, the lowest rank and pay grade. Entering a branch of the military with JROTC experience and having earned college credits from a college like NETC, allows recruits to begin their military career at a higher rank and pay level.

NETC offers certifications and degree programs that Junior ROTC members can start and complete while enrolled in high school, making them eligible to receive an advanced rank when they enlist.

Kanyia Purefoy, now a junior at Marlboro County High School, joined the JROTC program her freshman year. After graduating, Purefoy plans to enlist in the Air Force and become an anesthesiologist. She learned information at the session that will help her reach her career goals.

"I was not aware earning college credits can improve your rankings when you enlist," she said. "I plan on taking some medical courses at NETC during the summer."

NETC representatives gave students a tour of the newly renovated campus. Lunch was provided.

NETC's participation in the Dual Enrollment Pell experiment gives JROTC Students access to Pell Grants. Students were encouraged to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find out how much Pell Grant they qualify for.

Pell Grants can be used to cover a variety of costs, and unlike loans, do not have to be repaid.
