Honor Society recognizes students for academic achievement

More than 134 students from Northeastern Technical College and Chesterfield County's four public high schools were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) on Feb. 18 at NETC's main campus in Cheraw.

The inductees were applauded for their outstanding achievement while enrolled in career and occupational programs.

The guest speaker for the event was Ray Tomasco, Managing Partner for reesmarx usa, LLC.  During his speech he commended the students on the distinctive honor of being named to the NTHS and spoke about the key to being a success, stating that in order to be successful, students need to be themselves, follow dreams and have a clear plan of how they plan to achieve them.

"We chase things that aren't important and worry over things we cannot control. We tend to look out when we should be looking in," said Tomasco.  "Take a hard look at what your beliefs are and how they either hurt or help you. You need to be accountable and also start living in integrity.  The traits you already have, you just need to let them out! It's as simple as that."

Dr. Forest Mahan, vice president of academic affairs and student services for NETC, and Dr. J. Harrison Goodwin, superintendent of Chesterfield County School District, also congratulated students on their achievements in technical education.

Before new members were inducted, a candle lighting ceremony was conducted along with a reading about the honor society's vision and mission statements.

Inducted into the National Technical Honor Society for NETC were Tammie Allen, Derendia Odom Allison, Sheila Nicole Boatwright, Cecile M. Boudreaux, Fredisha Vanise Bridges, Mary Burch Burnell, Brian Daquan Campbell, Sabrina Danielle Campbell, Brittany Michelle Davis, James Franklin Davis, Kody William Faulkenberry, Samantha Blake Faulkenberry, Janecia Roxieanna Garner, Adam Corey Hendrix, Joshua Matthew Hewitt, Karen Sellers Jackson, Nakia Lorraine Johnson, Amanda Kelly, Hannah Lynn Kirkley, Jesse Austin Lett, Aaron Tyler McCathern, Dwan Yvette McQueen, Christopher Joel Miles, Lisa Nadine Mitchell, Brian Scott Moore, Helen L. Rowe, Jillianne Ariana Shannon, Jerry James Stafford, Christopher Edward Stubbs, Elizabeth Lee Truett, Amy Michelle Wallace, Kenneth Lee Webster, Hendrix Qunatro Wilson, Queena Burch Yanez, and Carl Antony Young.

National Technical Honor Society advisor for the College is Melisa Johnson, and co-advisors are Michael Kaltwang and Michael Black.

The National Technical Honor Society was established in 1984 to honor student achievement and leadership, promote educational excellence and enhance career opportunities. This is the highest award to honor excellence in career and technical education in the United States.
