Free Success Skills class starts October 20

Free classes designed to help individuals assess their career skills and explore relevant career pathways through education at Northeastern Technical College (NETC), will be offered October 20-23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the NETC Cheraw main campus in room 813.

The Success Skills four-day class is designed to benefit single parents, homemakers and individuals who are interested in nontraditional careers.

Individuals who are interested in starting a career traditionally held by the opposite sex are eligible for the nontraditional careers program. An example of this would be women who are interested in becoming machinists, electricians or drafters. Likewise, men who are interested in careers such as nursing, or becoming a receptionist or accounting clerk are also considered nontraditional program eligible.

To qualify for the Single parent/homemaker program, single parents must be unmarried or legally separated from a spouse, and have custody or joint custody of a minor child. Homemakers must be adults who work, or have worked, without payment, to care for the home and family.

Program participants will receive advice and information about potential career pathways and relevant career training available at NETC with a variety of guest speakers presenting information over the course of the program. Some of the topics discussed will be budgeting and banking, resume building and job interviewing, stress management, critical thinking and 21st century hiring practices.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to tour the NETC campus and counsel with faculty members and previous program participants about the career-oriented academic pathways offered by the college.

The class is free of charge. Participants who complete these orientation and exploration classes will be encouraged to enter a second phase of the program, which includes enrolling as a student in one of NETC's business, technology or health and public service academic pathways.

Each participant will receive help in locating tuition assistance. Available assistance for qualified students may include financial support in areas such as books, childcare and transportation.

Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and attend all four skills classes in order to qualify for assistance through these special programs. Participants must also bring their 2013 income tax information to class for spring semester financial aid purposes.
