Former NETC students make confessions

Two former Northeastern Technical College students returned to campus April 8 to share their personal experiences on transferring from NETC to a four-year college at a workshop entitled "Confessions of a Transfer Student."

Tyeshia Campbell, business administration major at Gardner-Webb University, and Lawrence Nivens, business management major at Francis Marion University, answered questions in an interview style presentation designed give current students an "inside look" into transferring from NETC.

Former NETC student Kristen Harvey, who is currently attending University of South Carolina, and unable to attend the workshop, sent her own confessions in a voice recording, which was played for students.

"One of the biggest differences I found at USC is the class size," stated Harvey.  "At NETC our classes were anywhere from 15 to 25 students, but here the classes are much larger.  My marketing class has more than 300 students in it."

During the presentation, Support Services Counselor Wendy Woods, asked the former students questions about why they transferred, how different their current school was from NETC, what challenges they faced, and more.

Campbell and Nivens both admitted they wished they paid more attention to college transfer guides available at NETC, and knew ahead of time, which classes would transfer to the four-year college they were attending.

Campbell, shared with students that she hadn't initially planned to transfer to a four-year college, confessing that while at NETC she took classes she "wanted" to take, and was caught off guard when she found that some of those classes were not accepted into her program at Gardner-Webb.

"Even if you don't think you are going to transfer to a four-year school after NETC, you should always try to take classes that transfer out, just in case you do change your mind," Campbell advised.

Nivens agreed and told students they could save themselves time, money and headaches by knowing what the transfer requirements were for their future college.  He also expressed his appreciation for his time at NETC.

"When I graduated high school, I knew I wasn't prepared to go straight to a four-year college," Nivens said.  "I probably wouldn't have made it.  NETC was a great starting point and helped acclimate me to college life while preparing me for my four-year university."

The "Confessions of a Transfer Student" workshop was hosted by Student Support Services, which provides resources to first generation college students and other qualified students, helping them navigate obstacles that make getting a college education a challenge.  The program offers tutoring, educational counseling, skill-development workshops, career awareness and planning and cultural development opportunities.  The department is housed in the Success Center, which is located in the 800 building of the Cheraw Campus and is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on Fridays from 7:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  For more information about upcoming workshops and student support services available at NETC, contact (843) 921-6942, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
