Dwain Bailey

Science Instructor

When did you start working for NETC?  August 2019

What is your primary function/responsibility in your role at NETC? The education and preparation of our students in the biological sciences.

How will you help NETC accomplish its Mission to prepare the workforce of Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Dillon counties through education and training? I see my small part in this mission as being a facilitator for every student who needs help. We are here to serve all the counties and their residents to prepare for the future.

What is one interesting thing most people do not know about you (hobby, talent, place lived, places traveled, etc.)? The thing that surprises my students the most about me is that I go to more concerts than they do (average 15-20/year). My hobbies are golf and guitar, both of which I play like an elephant with vertigo. I currently live in Hartsville with my wife Sallie and 5 dogs. We have been fortunate enough to travel to 40 states and 5 countries and still be able to return to South Carolina.

What is a positive experience you've enjoyed while working at NETC? NETC has the most caring, helpful group of people I have ever had the pleasure of working around. There are no strangers at this college. From day one, everyone is welcomed and made to feel part of this family.

What is a motivational thought you'd like to share with Prospective Students, Current Students, and/or Alumni? I had a professor a hundred years ago who taught with what he called the modified Socratic method. He used to explain that we are not tape recorders. We learn by listening, doing, and asking questions. If my students don't ask me questions, then I'll ask them questions. It's one thing to hear, it's entirely another to be able to reword and explain what you heard. At the end-of-the-day, I want my students to have fun and realize education isn't life-or-death, but it can change and shape the rest of their life.

Education, Past Positions & Experiences:
After receiving a BS in Biology from FMU, I took an about-face and spent almost 27 years in commercial nuclear power. I left nuclear power in 2008 and started teaching biology courses as an adjunct in 2010. I received a Master of Education degree concentrated on Integrated Biology from the American College of Education. Three colleges and 1 high school later, I have had the distinct honor and pleasure to be able to teach at NETC.
